What is “Problems in Photography” about?

Problems in Photography challenge conventional notions of the post-photographic medium as illustrated by these four visionary artists delving into a new digital realm. This featured drop invites viewers to contemplate the ever-evolving relationship between technology and visual storytelling, offering fresh perspectives on the art of image-making beyond a lens-based practice.

About the Curator - Jessica Yatrofsky

Jessica Yatrofsky is a NYC-based artist and author known for exploring body politics, beauty, and gender. She received her MFA from Parsons the New School for Design and published her first photography monograph, I Heart Boy, with powerHouse Books in 2010 and her second photography monograph, I Heart Girl, in 2015. In 2017, she published her debut collection of poems titled Pink Privacy and Golden Thrown in 2022. Jessica’s photographic work is part of the permanent collection with the Leslie Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art and the Museum of Sex. Her photography work has been exhibited overseas, and her film work has been both televised and screened at film festivals internationally. Jessica’s writing has been featured in Forbes, Interview, and New York Magazine publications. In 2021, Jessica began minting her work on the blockchain.

About the Artists

Bobby Davison

Bobby Davidson is a New York City-based artist and cinematographer. Bobby has established himself as a multi-disciplinary artist using painting, sculpture, film, and virtual reality. Assembling works from both the physical and digital world, he has sequentially created a lineage of works that navigate beyond a singular dimension, capturing an extension of both the physical and non-physical.

Danielle Ezzo

Danielle Ezzo is an interdisciplinary artist and writer based in Brooklyn, NY. Her practice often begins with photography as an entry point and leans into new approaches to image-making, the shortcomings of the medium, and the slippages between innovation and understanding. She blends contemporary technological artifacts with handmade, historical, and personal. She possesses a particular affinity for exploring archives and data sets, using them as tools to uncover and reflect on larger cultural themes about how we see ourselves through the lens of images.

Gregory Eddi Jones

Gregory Eddi Jones is a post-photographic artist, writer, and publisher based between Philadelphia and New York. Jones's work is grounded in methods of appropriation and the re-authorship of existing photographic, literary, and aesthetic traditions. His practice often engages with visual criticism, dark humor, cultural commentary, and building conversant bridges between past and present cultural, political, and technological conditions.

Joseph Desler Costa

Joseph Desler Costa is a Milan-based visual artist. His recent photographic and video works take the form of sculptural prints and video installations that evoke the machine-made and mass-produced and follow the artist’s interest in both subverting and embracing the languages of commercial, fashion, and product photography. Oftentimes autobiographical, Desler Costa’s work examines the origins of fantasy, the intersections of consumerism and ego, and relationships between longing, selfhood, and purchasing power.
